Here's an activity that uses a wonderful little toy we found at the National Library of Virtual Manipulatives or Interactive Mathematics, Utah State University .

When you click this image, , you will be taken to a math toy that is adjustable. You can click on the arrows to move your play area up or down, left or right.

Once your play area is set, you can move your mouse over the black dots and the toy will tell you what coordinates correspond to each dot. If you CLICK a dot the toy will start to DRAW.

SO HERE IS YOUR CHALLENGE!
This can be played alone or with friends.

  1. Click to open the Coordinate Sketchpad.
  2. Get your axes in the middle of the Sketchpad by using the arrows.
  3. Make a simple picture using exactly 20 points.
  4. Copy the coordinates used to make the picture in order on a piece of paper.
  5. Turn off your monitor only.
  6. Exchange your coordinates with someone else who has 20 points written, or do this alone.
  7. Now recreate the picture on a sheet of graph paper by hand.
  8. Compare your drawings at the end, by turning the monitors back on.
  9. The game is won if the hand drawn picture matches the electronic picture.
